A Legacy of Inspiration: 1967 to Today

The company’s origins are rooted in a personal mission. In 1967, Australian surgeon Professor Graeme Clark began researching electronic hearing because of his father’s profound deafness.

Inspired by a seashell and a blade of grass on a beach, he discovered how to thread electrodes into the inner ear. His breakthrough led to the first multichannel cochlear implant surgery, in 1978, and the founding of Cochlear in 1981. Since then, the company has provided over 700,000 devices in more than 180 countries.
