New research from the UK Biobank and the University of Warwick has highlighted the link between your brain health and the food you eat – and that the diet you keep makes a big difference to your mental health.
A large sample of 181,990 participants was analyzed for a range of different factors, including genetics, brain imaging, cognitive functions, and blood metabolic markers to find out the connections between nutrition and your overall well-being.
It makes sense that a balanced diet was linked to better mental health and stronger cognitive functions. Another important note from our perspective as hearing healthcare professionals is the link between cognitive health and your hearing, as the two are also intrinsically linked.
With strong hearing health and a balanced diet, you’ll benefit from sharper memory and better cognitive functions, leading to an overall boost to your quality of life.

Emphasis on Healthy Food for Healthy Brains
Nutritional awareness goes a long way in helping promote healthier eating habits across different populations, especially because a poor diet can not only influence our mental health but also our physical well-being.
The lead author for this study, Professor Jianfeng Feng, emphasized that dietary choices can be influenced by socioeconomic status; affordable nutritious food policies are essential to ensure that we’re eating well within our means and public health can be improved.
Since individuals in the study with better diets showed better mental capacities and stronger cognitive functions, the evidence is clear that better nutrition leads to better overall health – and we can take small steps toward improving our health at home.
The study mentions gradual dietary modifications to help slowly introduce better nutrition without shocking our systems; slowly reducing sugar and fat intake over time will lead your body to start craving healthier options instead to fulfill the need for healthier sugars and fats, like fruit sugars and fats from unprocessed food (avocado and fish are two great options).
