Tinnitus Management in Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Simi Valley, and Oxnard

Tired of the Ringing in Your Ears?

Ringing in the ears, buzzing or a hissing sound is most commonly known as tinnitus.

The condition, which is known to affect 75% of people, can last anywhere between a couple of hours to a full day.

If you’ve ever been to a concert before or gone shooting, then you’ll know the ringing sensation you get in your ears afterward too well.

While in most cases the ringing goes away after a few hours, for some people, the buzzing sensation is constant and cannot be treated by a good night’s sleep.

What Is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus affects people in different ways. While some people experience it at stressful points in their lives, others notice it all the time. What stands true amongst all cases is that the more you pay attention to it, the more the sounds intensify.

Experiencing a continuous ringing or buzzing is one of the most frustrating conditions to cope with, especially if you cannot find any relief from it.

What Are The Causes?

Often, people are surprised to know that tinnitus is not a disease, but it is a symptom of something else going on in the body.

For example, it could be as a result of a head injury, an ear infection, or most commonly, as a result of hearing loss.

Sometimes certain medications can cause tinnitus to flare up, so it might be worth taking a note of all the medications you are currently taking to ensure nothing is making it worse.

Some of these include antibiotics, antidepressants, diuretics or cancer medication.

The prevalence of tinnitus also tends to increase with age, affecting 14.3% of people aged 60-69 years old.

West Coast Treatment For Tinnitus

As tinnitus is caused by an issue in the body, if you treat the disease, typically, tinnitus will go away on its own.

When you come into our office, the first thing we will do is have a chat about your lifestyle and talk through what may be potentially making it worse. Stress can cause tinnitus to flare up, so we always talk with you and evaluate what could be causing you to feel stressed.

Alongside intervention, the use of hearing aids or maskers can help to mask the tinnitus by masking the internal ringing.

If the tinnitus is caused by other medical conditions, we may refer you to one of the ears, nose, and throat (ENT) doctors we work alongside.

How Is Tinnitus Treated?

While there is no cure for tinnitus, doctors have developed various methods to manage it.

  • Masking or covering awareness of the sound
  • Medications to reduce stress, anxiety, or to aid sleep
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) works to change the way you think about your tinnitus to reduce anxiety
  • Desyncra Sound Therapy used to disrupt the neural signal
  • The Listening Pillow Sleep System relaxes the body and promotes an undisturbed sleep
  • Hearing aids help to mask the ringing
